Latest Update - February 2012
Consultation on the draft Strategy has now ended. Many thanks to those who
attended the exhibitions and provided feedback on the proposals.
The feedback received is now being collated and The
Strategy will be revised and finalised accouting for the comments received. The Strategy is
due to be completed in Summer 2012.
The Strategy will then be put forward for Environment Agency and Defra approval.
This is anticipated to occur in late 2012. Once approved the detailed studies to
implement the priority works will be undertaken.
Further updates will appear here in due course.
What is a Coastal Strategy?
A coastal strategy assesses a shoreline in detail, identifying the risks and
providing a strategic framework for managing the risks identified.
The Southampton Coastal Flood and Erosion Risk Management Strategy (The
Strategy) reviews the policy recommendations of the Shoreline Management Plan
and develops sustainable approaches
to managing the flood and erosion risks around the City of Southampton.
The Strategy appraises a range of coastal management options to
determine the preferred options to cost effectively reduce the risk of flooding
and erosion which is set to increase significantly in the future due to sea level rise.
Study Area
The Southampton Coastal Flood and Erosion Risk Management Strategy frontage encompasses
the entire city boundary spanning from the tidal limit of the River Itchen
(Woodmill) to Redbridge on the River Test.
Who is Undertaking the Strategy?
Southampton City Council have appointed URS Scott Wilson to undertake the study
and prepare the Strategy documentation. Funding for the project is provided
through the Environment Agency.
